We all grow in different ways and we all must grow from what has come before. In Creation, this is evident in all the diversity of life and landscapes. Icicles form from the snow and sleet melting in direct sunlight before refreezing as they drip. Fungi grows from the nutrients within logs and other deceased plants and animals to eventually sprout into stunning or subdued displays of their complexity. Even forest ecosystems grow from succession species (like oaks!) that begin to transform grassland into forests over generations. For those of us in the church, we grow from the saints who came directly before us and the wisdom and testament of our ancestors of faith. We are a part of God’s Creation and as God continually grows closer to us through compassion and love, may our growth from those who came before us be towards God and all of God’s Creation in the same.
