Reflection:

“If we maintain an appropriate level of humility about ourselves and optimism about the power of nature to heal itself, the future can be one thing above all- green” (Wohlleben, 3)! We often find a lot of doom and gloom around the state of our natural world, and some of it is warranted. However, this also diminishes our agency as integral caretakers of Creation – which sometimes includes just stepping back. While invasive plant species need to be removed and contiguous strands of forests need to be restored – our role is to fill the holes left by our collective actions, not to take on actions beyond these. We can take the appropriate place of large carnivores when reintroducing them isn’t appropriate, we can utilize controlled burns where needed, and we can mitigate climate change so biomes don’t collapse. But ultimately, God endowed Creation with a wisdom of its own, and it knows its roles and will fulfill them if we fulfill our God given roles of healing our own missteps.
