Good Stories Kill You a Little

By March 24, 2025Uncategorized
“What do all good stories do? They kill you a little. They turn you into something you weren’t” (Powers, 412). As people of faith, we know death isn’t the final word, something we remember especially during this season of Lent. Instead, death is the opportunity for that which Creation is putting on full display this time of year, resurrection. The stories of Jesus told in the gospels should kill us a little bit when we hear them. The story of the Good Samaritan should kill parts of us that are more self-centered and help us look at everyone in the world as our neighbors. The story of the Rich Man and Lazarus should kill the parts of us which worship wealth and help us care for the most marginalized people of the world by listening to their needs. The story of the sheep and the goats should kill the parts of us that build walls to protect ourselves and help us to build bridges which feed the hungry, welcome the migrant, and care for the sick. Together, these stories make us into something we weren’t, a reflection of Jesus in the world today.
